What is Little Flowers? The Little Flowers Girls' Club, created by Rachel Watkins from a book by Fr. Lasance, is a quickly growing national grass roots phenomenon. Many families are initiating groups that involve girls from about 5 to early teens in virtue-based club activities. During the meetings, girls learn about virtues and saints which exemplify those virtues. They are encouraged to memorize scripture verses (our recordings are very helpful for that!) Activities are up to each group and usually consist of crafts, games, songs, and skits. The girls "earn" their virtue badge by completing a number of objectives on the list. Younger girls need accomplish fewer of the objectives while older girls are encouraged to achieve more. Many groups take on service projects and evangelistic opportunities. This is a wonderful group for Catholic girls under the patronage of St. Therese the Little Flower! What are the benefits? Who can join? How much time will it take to prepare? How much will it cost?
Benefits for your family include virtue training, good solid friendships, great role models (the saints), service opportunities, Christ centered activities...and hopefully an eternity with God our father in heaven.
Most groups serve girls from 5 years to 16 years of age, though you can create any group you wish.
Preparation time is definitely decreasing with the advent of badges, virtues and verses recordings, and sashes created by Quiet Waters Productions! Cooperative efforts help decrease preparation time. Large groups can divide the activities up so that one mom only has to prepare one meeting every so often. Smaller groups save time by having to prepare for only a few. The manuals have lots of ideas, and craft books are on their way.
This too depends on your group. Start up costs can be as low as $4.50 per girl for just the manual, and you can make the sashes and badges yourself. This can usually be done for $10 per child per year. Or you can purchase badges for $10 per year plus a name badge for $4. Sashes can be purchased for $12 (Quiet Waters Productions). These can be worn for all the years a girl is a Little Flower. The Virtues and Verses recordings ($12 cd or $10 cassette) have been used by many groups and individual families to memorize scripture in an upbeat manner.
